SHARING THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS WITH EVERYONE

THE ORGAN

The organ was originally built by William Hill & Son of London in 1891. It had an attached console buried under the Great organ sound board, (not the most ideal position for the organist!).

Rushworth & Dreaper of Liverpool rebuilt the instrument in 1928 and added tubular pneumatic action. Since then a few additions were made (details not known) until Ray Greaves, organ builder of Plympton Plymouth was commissioned in 1974 to dismantle the organ and treat several areas of woodworm. The work also included the addition of electric action enabling the fitting of a detached oak console in the North Transept by means of a long 'umbilical cord' for ease of movement of the console. At the same time the choir stalls were removed from the chancel and positioned in front of the chancel screen, this enabled the organist to obtain a better balance between the choir, organ and congregation. The console could also be placed centrally in the nave for special occasions and recitals. Dr Donald Hunt gave the opening recital on this occasion. In 1981 the choir stalls were replaced in the chancel to allow for the re-ordering to bring the altar forward of the screen to accommodate a more modern worship style.

MASSIVE ORGAN TRANSPLANT ABOUT TO BEGIN

Our Organ transplant began on Monday 19th November 2007 after many years of planning  and fundraising.

Organ builders Nicholson & Co. of Malvern Worcs  removed all the metal and wooden pipes and have returned them from their workshops after a complete restoration. After consultation between Andrew Moyes, Managing Director  and Guy Russell, Technical Manager of NICHOLSON and Mike Hackeson organist at St. Matthias' for over 20 years, an exciting new scheme was prepared. It is intended that this will try to suit many syles of worship both for to-day's church but also hopefully, for the future.
The expected completion date is July/August 2008 and after a period of 'Settling'. celebrations will begin. It ihas been suggested that this date may be brought forward, more news as things progress.
