Contemporary Worship

Closer Still? The Edge?

What's that all about?

Well, the short answer is that they are both Youth-led Services at St. Matthias'. You may remember the passage in the Book of Romans that says:

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved"  How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

I would suggest that the St Matthias' Mission Statement is very pertinent to this verse - "Sharing the Good News of Jesus with Everyone"  Of course 'Everyone' includes the teenagers and young people, and I am very excited abouy what is beginning to happen here at St Matts. Some of you will be aware of the incredible tallent that we have in our young people - you may have heard them at All  Age Service or at Prayzone. On the 1st and 3rd Sundays you can also hear them in the evening. For many years the 3rd Sunday has been home to 'The Edge' described sometimes as 'Contemporary Worship'. With the blessing of the PCC, the Young People have now taken on the commitment of the 1st Sunday as well, but wanted to have a different focus, so this service is more worship-based. They have chosen to call it 'Closer Still' bringing back a name from some years ago.

At both services you will find some excellent modern worship and be led into God's presence by an enthusiastic and gifted group; you will also find an opportunity to meet with God in Prayer, learn from His word and share fellowship over coffee and, more often than not, doughnuts!

Whilst it is led by the young people, it is all inclusive and all are welcome. I would encourage you to come and see what God is doing amongst the next generation of church leaders - they are the preachers refered to in Romans who will enable their peers to hear of the Lord,

Paul Barton
